EVALUATION IN ART AND DESIGN

What is evaluation for and how we implement that?

Evaluation is to ascertain, to determine the importance of, effectiveness or worth of, to access.

In Arts and Design, our work is visual, needs to be encouraged , for formation and feedbacks. Productive evaluation is not a threat for positive feedback for students and teachers alike.

Being a student -teacher has given me greatest insight into the thoughts , action, and positionality of a student, not that I will understand all the intersectionality but it will help me in assessments and feedbacks. Regular observations and feedbacks can be usefully delivered either via forms or in multiple assessment points of progression through the units. This allows for improvements and feedbacks by the teachers or peers.

However, grade formative assessments can cause issues and can be hard to manage when if comes to the Summative assessments, tutors could meet with technicians and request feedbacks on the success and feeling of student team after project submission.

Evaluating teaching in Arts and Design

Our values as individuals, we bring our different values to our pedagogies, positionality, intersectionality, knowledge, skills, and life experiences like

Pedagogy of compassion, Humility, Equal opportunity, Confidence building, Openness, curiosity and community into our Practices. How we inscribe these values into our curriculum depend greatly on our freedom and limitation to change.

Being a teacher- student has been the best part of the Course. In my practice as a technician, I do not do formal assessment, but being a student has given me the UAL assessment criteria-

  1. Enquiry- active learning and reflection, how the student explores research and learn about the subject.

2. Knowledge- gathering information and enhancing understanding, inform work explore diverse cultures and connection and appreciation what you do in wider context.

3.Process- The journey of learning. risk taking and experimentation. keeping creative momentum, developing ideas from start to finish.

4. Communication-telling the story your learning and making. Sharing your learning with an audience, presenting and explaining your work to different people.

5.Realisation-creating your work, revealing what you learnt . taking a look back and evaluating the work you have produced.

What does this mean in my daily pedagogical encounter?

Reflection on values and the assessment criteria, asking question, initiating discussions, encouraging and pointing the students on the track for individual growth, confident building, communication and critical thinking in the class and outside the class. Out of classroom learning like, gallery trips, Exhibitions, professional speakers should be encouraged rather than passing units.
